When it comes to motherboards for this processor, unlike previous-generation processors, the processor cannot be run on older motherboards. It requires an AM5 socket motherboard, which is only present in the B650 and X670 chipset. These chipsets are the successors of B550 and X570 chipsets and provide new features like DDR5 memory and PCI-E 5.0. There is no DDR4 motherboard based on these chipsets, which is why the latest Ryzen processors must be coupled with DDR5 memory.

The Biostar X670E Valkyrie is a spectacular motherboard to buy for your Ryzen 7 7700X. As an “Extreme” variant of the X670 boards, it does indeed come with features that support extreme overclocking capability. For example, it features huge VRM heatsinks, high VRM counts, and a high-end power delivery system of 22 phases design rated 105A.

As a high-end motherboard for the Ryzen 7000 series, it supports PCIe 5.0 for both GPU and M.2. Two of the PCIe slots support PCIe 5.0 x 16 but the bandwidth drops two 8 lanes per slot if you decide to use two graphics cards. It also features two PCIe 5.0 x 4 M.2 slots as well as an additional two M.2 slots at PCIe 4.0 x 4.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the Biostar Valkyrie has six SATA III ports with plenty of USB such as USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C ports for both front ad rear and nine USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports. It also features two coaxial antenna jacks but no WLAN or Bluetooth modules come included with the board. But if you really fancy Wi-Fi connectivity, I would recommend you to install a PCIe M.2 Wi-Fi card.

The Biostar Valkyrie is indeed a beautiful board with 8-layer PCB with fully covered heatsinks with a black brushed look and some bling of RGB on the heat spreaders. Its unique black-gold color scheme and minimalistic color accents and RGB lighting. In order to control the RGB, Biostar’s RGB utility called AURORA can be used.

For the network department, it uses an Intel 1225V 2.5 Gbps Ethernet LAN chip although we would have liked to see a 10 Gbps LAN instead. It also uses an older Realtek ALC1220 7.1 CH audio codec for audio. The board also features extra buttons on the IO such as a BIOS update and reset CMOS switch.

For this board, Asus has gone for a predominantly silver-on-black color scheme and comes with an integrated I/O shield along with silver heatsinks all around. For RGB lovers, it does have some slight RGB on the heat sink.

The VRM heatsinks are decently sized with 14+2 power stages that are rated for up to 70A. It also has four M.2 drive slots, all of which have heatsinks to keep them cool. In terms of memory support, it has four DDR4 slots for a total of 128GB RAM with speeds of 6400+.

Asus has included a Q-LED for debugging any issues when posting as well as a CPU over voltage jumper for overclocking purposes. You can also spot a clear CMOS button and onboard power switch on the board. The PCIe 5.0x16 slot features Asus’s SafeSlot and Q-Release which allows easy removal of graphics cards.

A single PCIe 5.0 x 4 M.2 slot along with two PCIe 4.0 x 4 slots as well as a single PCIe 3.0 x 4 slot. All slots come with the Q-Latch feature which allows tool-less installation of M.2 SSDs.  It also has four SATA III ports and comes with eight fan headers for a variety of cooling solutions as well as dual aRGB headers and a single 12V RGB header.

The X670E Aorus Xtreme is Gigabyte’s latest motherboard for the new Ryzen 7000 series and comes with the new LGA 1718 AM5 socket. As an  “E” or Extreme variant of the X670 motherboard series, it is built for extreme overclocking thanks to its eight-layer PCB, advanced thermal design, and high-end 18+2+2 phase VRM power design rated at 105A. This enables you to achieve higher and more stable clock speeds and it uses dual 8-pin EPS connectors to power it.

As for the connectivity, it supports PCIe 5.0 for GPUs and M.2s and comes with ten USB Type-A ports ― six of which are USB 3.2 Gen 2 and four regular USB 2.0 ports. It also comes with two USB 3.2 Type-C ports so it has quite a lot of ports for connectivity. The I/O also includes extra buttons such as a Q-Flash button for updating the BIOS as well as a clear CMOS button.

Along with six SATA III 6 Gbps ports, you also get ten PWM fan headers along with two addressable RGB headers and three RGB headers which are more than enough to allow you to customize the RGB and fans in your build. There is a significant amount of RGB on the heat sinks as well and the Aorus branding looks quite premium too. 

It uses the Realtek ALC1220 audio codec which can be quite dated but at least the front-panel codec is quite good, and it also comes bundled with an ESS SABRE DAC. The Gigabyte X670E also comes with superb network connectivity, featuring a 10 Gbps LAN and integrated Intel Wi-Fi 6E.

Although it doesn’t have any USB 4.0 and uses an older codec such as the Realtek ALC1220, it is still a great motherboard option to consider for your Ryzen 7 7700X. Not only that, it offers a balanced set of features with a price that’s neither too low nor high for an E series board.
